Regional Initiative against the Criminalization of Abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean: #HealthWithoutFear #SaludSinMiedos

Since October 2022, Ríos, together with the feminist lawyer Ximena Casas, has been developing a multidimensional strategy to generate empirical evidence that illuminates the consequences of using criminal law to regulate abortion.

Through a standardized methodology implemented in six Latin American and Caribbean countries (Brazil, Chile, Guatemala, Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Uruguay), the Regional Initiative on the Criminalization of Abortion (IRCA) gathered information on gender stereotypes and the violations of the rights of people criminalized for abortion between 2012 and 2022.

As a result of the Initiative’s work, six national reports were generated, along with a report that help identify regional trends and strategies to discourage the use of criminal law in regulating health services, such as abortion, and support actions to guarantee reproductive rights for women and people with the capacity to gestate in the region.
